　　 Located at the foot of Jade Spring Hill northwest of West Lake, Hangzhou Botanical Garden now occupies 231 hectares (571 acres) and holds approximately 4000 species of plants placed there since the founding year of 1956. The garden, which is regarded as a research base of plants and a botanical park as well, is the biggest botanical sanctuary in China. Featuring thousands of species of plants, the garden is divided into two main parts; a research section and an appreciation area. The latter is further grouped into species gardens. They include the botanical garden for economical plants, the botany classification area, the osmanthus and crape myrtle garden, the bamboo garden, the arbor garden, the medicinal plant garden, the lily magnolia and camellia garden, the potted landscape garden, the plant resources museum, and so on.
The scenery of Appreciating Plum Blossom in Lingfeng Temple is situated inside Qingzhi Castle of Hangzhou Botanical Garden. As early as the period of the Five Dynasties and Ten States (907-960), a Buddhist temple named Lingfeng was built there. The landscape became known gradually by everyday people, owing to the high recommendation by the famous poet of North Song Dynasty, Su Dongpo. By the year 1844 of the Qing Dynasty, about one hundred plum trees had been planted around the temple. Hundreds more were added outside the temple in 1909. Every spring, this is a must-see destination for those who appreciate plum blossom, for the blossoms there come out earlier and fade later than those of anywhere else. In addition,various kinds of plum produce and bamboo containers made there will generate even more pleasure for visitors.
Jade Spring, one of the many scenic spots inside the garden, is famous for its pure water. People there can enjoy watching the many colorful carps in the spring water. Nowadays, 'Appreciating Plum Blossom in Lingfeng Temple' and 'Enjoying Jumping Fish in Jade Spring' are considered the best tourist attractions around the West Lake area.
Amazingly, the garden has been equipped with so many leisure infrastructures, even a golf course, in order to meet the satisfaction of all visitors. Characterized by fresh air, a wonderful environment, bubbling streams and quiet ponds, luxuriant vegetation, and rare species of plants, Hangzhou Botanical Garden, as a theme park, welcomes people from each corner of the world for both sightseeing and relaxation all year round.
