Tianjin is an important economic center and one of the 4 municipalities directly under the jurisdiction of the Central Government(the other three are Beijing, political and cultural center and Shanghai, the economic center in the south and Chongqing ,another economic center in the southwest). Industry
Tianjin, the birthplace of China's modern industry, is one of the most important comprehensive industrial bases of the country. Industry makes up over 50% of its gross national product with over 10,OOO enterprises in more than 150 industrial sectors, mainly electronics, automobile, metallurgy, machinery, chemicals, textiles, and pharmaceuticals. Tianjin also possesses a complete industrial service system.
Science and Technology:
There are 25 universities and colleges, over 140 research institutes, and numerous vocational and technical schools in Tianjin, with high scientific research levels in over 30 different disciplines and 120 specialties. At present, there are 4 national laboratories, 27 national and ministerial technical
test centers, 21 national science and technology information centers under their respective industrial departments, 16 standardization centers, and 4 measurement centers.
Tianjin has one of the highest concentrations of scientists and technicians and are of the best developed science and technology in China.

Tianjin has an advantage over other large industrial cities, because of its abundant natural resources: petroleum, natural gas, various metallic and nonmetallic minerals, geothermal energy, and sea salt.
The industrial production costs including those of land, labor, and energy within TEDA are low compared to other parts of China.
